Residency
How long is a residency?
All residencies are approximately one month long. The residents all arrive on the afternoon of the 15th of one month and all leave the morning of the 13th of the next month.
The application states the residency starts on the 15th and ends the 13th. Is it all right if I need come a couple a days late or leave early from my residency?
Applicants are encouraged to commit to the arrival and departure schedule at Jentel for their residency preferences. Applicants’ availability to use the time awarded may be a factor in finalizing residency invitations.
How many people are at Jentel at one time?
Four visual artists and two writers are invited to come to Jentel each month.
Where is Jentel?
Jentel is on a working cattle ranch 20 miles southeast of Sheridan, Wyoming. The closest airport is in Sheridan (population 15,800) with connections to Denver International Airport. Billings International Airport is 144 miles northwest in Montana and offers multiple carrier service. Residents may arrange for their travel between Billings and Sheridan via Powder River Bus Lines.
How much is the application fee?
The application processing fee is $20 and is nonrefundable.
Application Form
How do I select a good reference for my Jentel application?
Since Jentel already has a panel of jurors to review your work sample and to make recommendations for residency awards, select individuals who may address your ability to thrive in a small isolated community and be self directed as an individual in your work. Jentel is located on a ranch twenty miles from town and your time is primarily unscheduled.
I am self taught and don’t have any teachers ormentors to contact as a reference. What do I do?
The reference should primarily address your interpersonal skills, self motivation and self direction. Select people who know you, who have worked with you or who have had an opportunity to observe your life and/or work habits in a group setting or situations. The references should know you well enough that they address these qualities and do so objectively.
I don’t have any slides of my art work, so may I send a CD?
Absolutely! We have revised our work sample guidelines for visual artists to include digital images submitted on a CD. The current guidelines and information for applicants are available and may be downloaded from the website. You may have seen
an earlier printed application form that has the former guidelines, when we accepted only 35mm slides.
- Submit 10-20 digital images of work completed in the past two years.
- Identify each file with your last name, first initial and number in this format: Jones.K_1.JPG, Jones.K_2.JPG, etc.
- Use a maximum of 2MB for each file.
- Keep it simple. No PowerPoint or slideshow, please.
- Format so files may be read on both Mac and PC operating systems.
- Label CD with your name and number of digital images.
- For each image, list your name, the number, title of piece, dimensions and date completed on a corresponding data sheet.
- Include a printed and a digital copy of the list.
I am desperately sticking with my 35mm camera and only have slides of my work. Are you still accepting slides? Will my work be equally represented with applicants who send a CD?
Certainly! We have revised our work sample guidelines for visual artists to include digital images submitted on a CD. The current guidelines and information for applicants are available and may be downloaded from the website. You may have seen an earlier printed application form that has the former guidelines, when we accepted only 35mm slides. For the present, you may also use 35mm slides to represent your work for the application.
- Submit one set of 10-20 slides of work completed in the last two years in a plastic slide sheet.
- Use standard mount for a carousel projector.
- No glass mounts, thick plastic mounts and no paper labels.
- Identify each slide with your name and a number from 1-20.
- Indicate the “top” on the front of each slide.
- Send only copies.
- Provide an accompanying data list corresponding to the slides.
- Include your name, the number of the slide, title of the piece, medium, dimensions and year of completion.
- Include a printed and a digital copy of the slide data list.
As time permits, slides of art work may be scanned and forwarded as digital images to the panel of reviewers.
I have a great video of my installations. May I use that for my application?
New media and new genre artists (film makers, video artists, installation and multimedia artists) may submit one of the following to represent their work:
a) up to 5 minutes of time based work on a DVD
b) 10-20 digital images on a CD
